Climbing in Sydney Harbour National Park

December 2010

The National Parks & Wildlife Service has revived the web Discussion Forum allowing people to comment on management of Sydney Harbour National Park (SHNP)

There is no guarantee, of course, that they'll pay any more attention to comments posted here than they did in the case of the original Forum!

Nevertheless, please think about visiting the site and posting a comment: http://sydneyharbourpom.net.au/POMforum

I have created a topic [ Public Participation in planning for, and management of, Sydney Harbour National Park ] and you can add to/comment on this or create your own topic.

For those who weren't around then, or can't remember the events, release of the initial 1998 Plan of Management for Sydney Harbour National Park "slipped under the radar" and climbers suddenly discovered they could no longer legally climb at North Head. This single event was the impetus behind SRC's creation of the role of Access Officer, and appointment of Barbara Darmanin to the position. Barbara worked tirelessly in the role but the opportunity to change the situation with respect to SHNP did not occur again till now. As the present incumbent I am working to see the climbing community unite in defeating the Service on this issue.

Mountain Equipment Fund Raising Supports Access Fund

December 2010

The Reel Rock Film Tour organised by Mountain Equipment on 3 November raised $1,340 from customer donations and the auction of items donated by ME. This sum has been given to the SRC to be added to the Access Fund and used to pay for rebolting materials.

In addition Mountain Equipment has donated 55 Fixe stainless steel rap stations to the SRC. These will be used to replace old and worn anchors as well as equip new routes throughout the Sydney region.

Kestrels on Hermione Perish:

December 2009

Unhappily it has been reported that a group of overseas climbers moved the kestrel nest that was reported on Hermione (see below). Unfortunately as a result the chicks have died...

Voluntary Bird Ban:- Nesting birds on Hermione (17) at Barden's Lookout

October 2009

There are reports that there is a pair of Nankeen Kestrels nesting in the cave three-quarter way up the above route. Anyone who has climbed this route will have seen the guano and bones littering the hole, which seems to have been abandoned in recent years. It is probably best to stay off the route until nesting season has ended (mid to late summer?).

SRC recommences running club climbing trips

July 2006

Following legal advice, the SRC committee has decided to recommence the running of club climbing trips. To support this, all members have been asked to sign a waiver as part of their club membership application, and the club has prepared a risk management document. Trip leaders and participants will have to adhere to the guidelines and procedures in this document.

There are many legal implications involved in group participation in a potentially risky activity such as rock climbing. Our legal advisor has prepared a list of answers to questions commonly asked on this matter.
